These notched ladders in a 'Y' shape are spread across West Africa, but are usually associated with the Dogon people in Mali and are used to access the upper levels of granaries or rooftops.

This charming group of five miniature ladders replicate the shape of the full-size ones, but were traditionally used on domestic altars containing pottery figurines and a clay jar containing the soul of the ancestors. The tiny ladders have the spiritual purpose of allowing the owner, after death, to climb inside the jar and join the ancestors.
20th century examples such as these were more likely made to be sold as decorative objects.
