This elegant pair of pearlware candlesticks date to the late 18th century and encapsulate the taste at the time for everything classical. Both are shaped as Cupid, the winged Roman god of Love, son and faithful companion of Venus. One is shown holding a bow and carrying a quiver filled of the famous arrows that make their targets fall madly in love, while the other is holding a torch, symbol of burning passion and attribute of Hymen, the Greek god of marriage.
