David Leach studio pottery lamp base, circa 1970s
Made in the 1970s, this David Leach studio pottery lamp base has a bulbous form, decorated with crosshatch resist marks on a green to grey ground. It has impressed marks near base, where there is also a hole for the cable.
David Andrew Leach (1911 – 2005) was the eldest son of Bernard Leach and Muriel Hoyle Leach, Bernard's first wife. He was born in Tokyo during his father’s stay with Japanese potter Shoji Hamada, father of the mingei (folk art) movement, which influenced hugely Bernard’s aesthetic.
The distinctive rustic, folk style with strong Japanese influence can be seen throughout David’s production and continues to be hugely popular with collectors for its simplicity and connection with nature.
