Inca pottery standing female figure, Peru, circa 1400-1600 AD.
The Inca Empire flourished in the Andes region of South America during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Emerging around 1438, it rapidly expanded to become the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. Renowned for its sophisticated infrastructure, including architectural marvels like Machu Picchu, the Inca Empire was characterized by remarkable terraced agriculture systems that enabled cultivation at high altitudes.
This charming figurine or rattle falls into the rich longstanding pottery traditions of earlier Andean cultures with typical elegant lines and clever use of added slip.
