The term 'scrimshaw' refers to the art of engraving on whale or walrus teeth or bones. The practice dates back to the late 18th, early 19th century when the whaling industry was at its peak. Bored sailors had a lot of time on their hands in between sightings,  and the hard parts of whales and walruses were readily available for decorating with pretty patterns. This one, made from the tooth of a sperm whale, features the image of a mighty whale barely aware of the tiny boat it capsized. Ooops! All framed by little hearts.
